Some Background on DNE Summer Camp
Dance New England (DNE) is a creative collective of people who love to dance, as well as a consortium of cooperatively run, not-for-profit, freestyle, barefoot dances in the New England area. DNE events include our annual summer camp and weekend events throughout the year hosted and produced by our member dances.

The DNE Summer Camp
This will be our 23rd summer camp!
Summer Camp is a wonderful place for people to come together to dance, play, explore and rejuvenate. Camp offers a wide array of classes and improvised activities, a beautiful lake and rustic environment, and the support and stimulation of a vibrant, creative community. Camp offers a nightly freestyle boogie and a variety of other evening activities such as contact jams, drum council, men.s and women.s circles, sweat lodges, family dances and a festival of homegrown talent. Shared play and shared work make camp a rewarding and inspirational community experience.

In our exploration of community and creativity, we emphasize:

  • respect for the differences among individuals and cultures
  • empowerment of children, elders, and all community members
  • acknowledgement that our bodies and environment are sacred
  • a drug free and alcohol free environment
  • non-violence and creative conflict resolution
  • safety to express ourselves and acknowledge the contributions that we each make to our community
  • cooperative efforts to create community and community events

About Community Service...

The essence of Dance New England is
collective work and personal responsibility.

Our community depends on the effort of every member to create summer camp. Coming to camp means being ready to work as well as play. There is a welcome place for your effort and initiative in DNE, both at camp and year round.

Please take the time to find it.

Community Service / Volunteer Spirit
Working together build community, helps to keep costs down, and is fun! All campers will be required to help with meals or general camp care. You will select your chore shifts when you arrive at camp. Camp surveys from last year rated chores as a great way to connect and some rated chores as one of their best camp experiences. If you have a disability and require a light chore, or for more information contact Dominique Meyers (617) 698-3403, anitra9977@aol.com

Community Meeting - Sunday August 25 12:30-4:30 PM
If you are not coming to camp and you are a member of Dance New England, you may attend just the meeting. There is an option for DNE members to come for 24 hours and pay a day rate. You must contact the registrar, Samantha Armer for details. (510) 655-1057, registrar@dne.org

Leadership Council
The Leadership Council (LC) is an elected governing board of directors of Dance New England. Elections for open positions are held after DNE Summer Dance Camp. In order to be eligible for the LC, one needs to have been a Rep, CCG member, Elder or have significant DNE organizational experience. LC terms are 3 years. If you would like to be a candidate for the LC, please answer the following questions on a separate paper, and include it with your camp registration or send it to Nancy Farber, 7 Lilac Lane, Amherst MA 01002-1102. For more information contact Nancy at (413)549-1138 or farnance25@aol.com

This Summer Camp

Accommodations
You may choose to stay in a cabin (bunks sleep 10-12 people) or bring your own tent. There will be designated cabins for women only, men only, women with children, and open cabins for anyone. Cabin space is limited, and fills up on a first-come, first-served basis. Circling "cabin" on your registration form does not reserve you a bed. Camping space is available in the fields and woods. Please heed the signs designating tenting areas.

Food
The Dining Hall is the heart of camp. We eat, chat, dance, sing, play chess and lounge on the porch. Three delicious, vegetarian meals and snacks are provided daily. Non-wheat and nondairy choices are available. All campers, supervised by professional cooks, participate in the joyful preparation of our wonderful food.

Waterfront
We enjoy a beautiful secluded lake with a large dock for swimming, boating, and water fun. Staff are needed, especially trained lifeguards.
For more info contact Mary Loan (617)489-6061, loanm@hotmail.com

New Waterfront Course!
There is a special opportunity for six individuals to come to camp early in order to receive American Red Cross lifeguard certification, with a required commitment to lifeguard during camp if they pass. The cost of the course will be shared with DNE. Training begins Sunday, August 18th and goes through Wednesday, August 21st. For more info contact Mary Loan (617)489-6061, loanm@hotmail.com

Young Person's Program
Full day activities are offered when most adult classes are in session. Each age group - infants, children, and teens - is staffed by qualified and creative counselors. Young people engage in sports and games, arts, dance, drama, and swimming. Teens draw on camp resources to design classes and activities that are of special interest to them. Teens may also participate in the CIT program to work with younger children, or the mentoring program to learn to work with the camp sound and light crew, the kitchen, waterfront, or other areas of camp organization. In order to prepare our kitchen and ensure adequate coverage for young people, it is important that you pre-register your kids for camp. At camp, all children 17 and under must be signed in to the children.s program by an accompanying parent or guardian. This is a legal requirement of the state of Maine. After you register you will receive detailed information about your child.s specific program and a list of what to bring to camp. The Young Peoples program coordinators are Erica Quimby and Zevey Steinitz. For information contact: (413) 268-3518
zevey@aol.com

Camp Store and Fee for Service
There will be space to sell your crafts, products, services to others at camp. A 12% tithe to DNE is required. Space is very limited; please indicate your request for store space on your registration form. For info on the camp store call Linda Lindgren (603) 924-9609. For info on fee for service work, call Michael Hayes at (212) 473-0166.

Buddies
One of the ways we build community between adults and children is through the buddy system. Adults and teens can sign up to be a special friend to a younger child (12 and under) who volunteers to be a special friend to an older person. Look for the buddy coordinator at camp to sign up.

Family Groups
Family groups are small groups that meet for an hour each day to share common interests and to provide a smaller community of support within the larger camp experience. There will be time during camp orientation to create and sign up for family groups. Some examples of family groups include Co-Counseling, Contact & Meditation, Women Only, Men Only, Singing, Gay/Lesbian/Bi, Parents & Small Children, Pan-fidelity/Alternative Relationships.

Work Exchange/Scholarship - Work is available for teens and adults for $9/hour. You must send in your registration form and pay your full camp fee prior to camp. You will be paid before you leave camp, or a check will be mailed to you.

Partial scholarships are also available. A written request can be submitted with your registration, or sent by July 20 to Al Robinson, c/o Samantha Armer, 474 40th Street. Oakland, CA 94609. For more info on work exchange/scholarship contact Al Robinson (781) 435-1447, Airiii@yahoo.com
